LOS PINCHOS
Dominican Kitsch is a celebration of the objects that define our daily lives. It highlights those items so deeply rooted in our culture that go unnoticed when seen so often, but bring with them collective stories and memories. This series rescues these objects and transforms them into sculptures, elevating the everyday, challenging traditional notions of taste,
luxury and hierarchy.
Each piece, starting with El Pincho, is more than a tool: it is a symbol of tradition, depicting work, beauty, ritual and cultural memory. These objects have been an essential part of Dominican women's hands, passed from generation to generation, from mother to daughter, from hand to hand, an unwritten heritage; but they have never been recognized for their true importance yet.
Therefore, this series values the Dominican visual identity, often labeled as kitsch, demonstrating that it is vibrant, complex, bold and an essential key to our heritage.
More than a simple accessory, El Pincho is an emblem of Dominican customs, where beauty becomes a meticulous art, a declaration of identity turned into tradition. In every polished hairstyle, in every perfect tubi, in every tightly fitted rolo there is a story. We all have a connection to a pincho, whether through the anchoitas, the rolos, the hairstyles or the tubi. This series enhances the effort implicit in these traditions, bringing to light the silent work of Dominican women, defending their social value and significance beyond the visual.
Kitsch Dominican is a love letter to our everyday objects, to the craft and to the visual identity of the country. It invites us to look carefully, to appreciate what we take for granted and to recognize the greatness of what, in its apparent simplicity, defines who we are.
